Celebrate Summer Around Pittsburgh: Mini-Vacation Ideas

It’s summer vacation season and although Pittsburgh gives you plenty of reasons to stick around for a stay-cation, there also are a lot of great spots for weekend getaways around the ‘Burgh. Instead of booking a flight to a tropical destination, you can just take a short drive and enjoy some of these mini-vacation spots that are close to the city.

1. Seven Springs Mountain Resort

Only an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, Seven Springs Mountain Resort attracts area residents and visitors year round. From skiing to spas and golfing to fine dining, Seven Springs truly has something for everyone. When you live in Pittsburgh, it’s the perfect escape that also happens to be right in your back yard!

2. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort

Just over an hour south of the city lies Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, a five-star luxury destination that sits on 2,000 acres. Complete with spa services, fine dining and excellent golfing, Nemacolin is the perfect place for a weekend getaway or even for a luxury home away from home!  

3. Erie

Less than two hours north of Pittsburgh is Erie, Pennsylvania, where you can relax on the beaches of Lake Erie, splash around at an awesome indoor water park and enjoy the thrills of rides at Waldameer Park! Erie’s got so much to do that you may want to stick around for more than one weekend!

4. Deep Creek

Just two hours south of Pittsburgh, Deep Creek, Maryland offers family fun in any season. Visitors can enjoy every outdoor activity from skiing to whitewater rafting. If you’re looking for something a little less adventurous and a little more relaxing, the beautiful mountains, rivers and lake offer the perfect scenery for curling up around the campfire. 

5. Geneva-on-the-Lake

A two-hour drive northwest of Pittsburgh will take you to Ohio’s Geneva-on-the-Lake, which is known as the state’s first summer resort. You can stay in a cabin or cottage along the coast of Lake Erie, where you can boat, fish or swim. There also are arcades, amusement rides and even live music to enjoy. Geneva-on-the-Lake offers a beach getaway that won’t take hours to get to!

6. Gettysburg

Only three hours southeast of Pittsburgh you can find history, shopping and much more in Gettysburg. Battlefields and museums offer an incredible opportunity to learn about our nation’s history. There is so much to explore in Gettysburg that you may end up wanting to stay longer than four score and seven years!

7. Hershey

Just over three hours east of Pittsburgh is Hershey, Pennsylvania. This wonderful weekend getaway location caters to everyone from amusement park lovers to chocolate lovers! You can enjoy the rides at Hersheypark and then sweeten the weekend with a chocolate experience at Hershey’s Chocolate World!

8. Put-in-Bay

Still have an urge to go the islands? Check out Put-in-Bay in Ohio! This two-by-four-mile island has everything from historic homes to great pubs to the nation’s third tallest monument! It’s a less than four hour trip west of Pittsburgh and Put-in-Bay offers everything from ferry rides for family fun to an exciting nightlife with great food and live music.
