'Tis the Season for DIY! Find 10 Homemade Holiday Decorating Ideas Here!

Let’s face it. We love DIY projects any time of the year. So, when the holiday season rolls around, we are more than excited to show off our DIY skills with some handmade, original and oh-so-cute holiday decorations for our homes.

Often times, DIY projects are less expensive than conventional, store-bought decorations; so, if you’re willing to put in a little time and effort, you can turn your home into winter wonderland the DIY way!

Here are 10 DIY holiday decorating ideas to try:

Wrapped Gifts – Have you trimmed your tree with every ornament, ribbon and candy cane you can find, but still feel like there is something missing? You don’t have to wait until Christmas morning to see your tree full of gifts galore. Find some empty boxes or get your holiday wrapping done a little early and use the gifts you create to add to your holiday décor before the holiday even arrives.

Advent Calendars – As the anticipation builds toward Christmas Day, you can increase the excitement around your house by making your own advent calendar. There are tons of DIY ways to create a fun (and tasty) advent calendar. Making a paint-can holiday tree or filling up an empty wall with your creative countdown are two of our favorite ideas.

Mobile Tree – Although we are in the digital age, we’re not talking about a digitally-enhanced holiday tree. We’re actually suggesting finding a way to make your holiday tree transportable! If you have a small tree that you can set up in a decorative wagon, you can take your holiday décor anywhere in your home! This fun idea is great for impromptu holiday party decorating.

Eye-catching Entryway – A quick and easy way to make your home sparkle for the holiday season is to adorn your entryway with decorations. If you’ve got a staircase in your foyer, run some plain green garland up and down the railings and add lights, poinsettias, ornaments, candy canes or some of your other holiday favorites. Instantly, your home is transformed into a warm, holiday wonder.

Photo Gift Tags – If you’re like us, you love giving photos to friends and family for the holidays. Why not make those extra photos of your children, pets or yourself work double-time by creating photo tags to adorn your gifts? You can use any extra photos you’ve printed throughout the year and with a hole-punch and some ribbon, you’ve got personalized gift tags that your friends and family may even want to hang on to!

Wreaths, Wreaths and Wreaths! – There are so many ways to create a festive DIY holiday wreath. Mesh wreaths are huge right now, but if you’re not feeling that crafty, create your own snowman by stacking and hanging three fresh or artificial pine wreaths on your door. Add an old scarf or hat and you’ve got a friendly snowman ready to greet your holiday guests all season long.

Ornaments Galore – DIY ornaments are an awesome holiday project for all ages. If you’ve got children, clay or salt dough Santa handprints are cute for decorating and giving away. You can also dress up plain, store-bought shatterproof ornaments by hand-painting your own designs on them. Finally, filling traditional ornaments with a little floor wax and glitter makes for a sparkly DIY holiday dazzler!

Festive Vases – Transform your everyday flower vases (or even jars) into holiday beauties by adding a few of your favorite things. Take candy canes, for instance. Lining a vase or jar with candy canes creates instant holiday fun that could even be edible! By adding some fresh or artificial blooms, you’ve got a seasonal masterpiece that is also a conversation piece!

Bright Luminarias – Making your own luminarias is an easy and inexpensive way to add instant appeal to your curb, mantel or dining room table! With just some plain white paper bags and battery-operated tea-light candles, your holiday light can safely shine throughout the entire season.

Recycled Greetings – After you read your holiday cards, what do you do with them? Throw them in a pile or file them away? Put them to use to decorate your home this holiday season. You can display them by hanging them with a sparkling ribbon or creating a festive tree design. Not only will you be showing your holiday cards off, but you’ll be letting your creative side shine, too!

‘Tis the season for creativity and fun with DIY decorations. So, showcase your talents by creating some festive, holiday décor that is all your own! Happy holidays!
