Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places?

Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places?

There’s admiring from afar. There’s love at first sight. There’s years of spending time in the wrong relationship before meeting your dream. There’s falling in love outside of your type. There’s going through a lot of duds until you find “the one.”

Really, there is no proven method for finding the home you’re meant to be with. It happens differently for everyone. But, unlike the way some people wait for Mr. or Miss Right to find them, Mr. or Miss Right Home is not out there searching for you. You’ve got to take the initiative to search for your perfect home.

What can you do to find your perfect match and create your own home search love story, where everyone ends up living happily ever after? Follow these few simple lessons to find true love during your home search:

1. Looking for “the one” online is OK!

You may not need match.com or another online dating service, but do get familiar with the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Simply put, the MLS is the best place to go to find an available home. It’s where real estate brokers list comprehensive information about properties that they’re selling. Think of the MLS like the inside information your best friend went the extra mile to dig up on your crush.

2. Don’t be afraid to get set up!

When you’re looking to find true love in a home search, don’t think you need to find it alone. Share your “want” list with your real estate agent and let him or her suggest some properties that might be right for you. Remember those wrong rentals and other duds that you’re ready to leave behind? Don’t be afraid to let a professional suggest some perfect matches for you.

3. Don’t agree to a blind date.

Although it is a great idea to get set up with some new properties that you may not have noticed on your own, it should go without saying that you should never make an offer or move forward on a home that you have not gone to see in person. Pictures are worth a 1,000 words; but, when it comes to buying a new home, seeing is a must!

4. Never settle for a one-night stand.

So you think you met “the one” last night? Everything you could ever want and you even found yourself talking about raising a family? Congratulations! That is so exciting and moving quickly to make it yours is a great idea; but, it is no reason to proceed recklessly! Make sure to thoroughly complete all inspections and carryout every part of your real estate contract before committing to any home, no matter how good it looked at first glance.

5. Always trust your instincts.

Like relationships sometimes can be, finding the right home can be a trying experience that takes a little time and effort. If your instincts are telling you that a home is right for you, then don’t be afraid to make that commitment and move forward, cautiously of course. Oppositely, if your instincts are pulling you away from a home that may look good, but just doesn’t feel right, it is OK to keep looking.

The moral of this home search love story is simple. It doesn’t matter what route you take to find your perfect home. When you’re comfortable, protected and truly feel “at home,” you know you’ve found a keeper.
