How to throw the perfect house warming party in your new home

As fall officially gets underway, we’re entering the holiday season, which can only mean one thing… it is time to entertain! And, if you’ve just moved into a new home, that entertaining itch has probably taken hold of you a little tighter this year.

Before the holidays approach, you may be planning to host a little housewarming soiree in your new home. And, why not? It’s the perfect way to meet your new neighbors, welcome your friends and family to visit and, yes, show off that new home!

Since you’re likely still unpacking boxes and making sure all of your personal belongings are in just the right spots, how can you make sure that you’re able to host the perfect housewarming party?

First and foremost, keep it simple. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you and your guests enjoy the first of many great nights in your hew home:

1. Welcome Your Guests Before They Arrive

In the midst of unpacking your new home, you’ll need to send out invitations to your housewarming party. Luckily for you, the days of paper invites, sealing envelopes and sending snail mail for a housewarming party are long gone. Evites are perfectly appropriate and your guests can quickly add your event to their mobile calendars once they receive their invite.

Be sure to include any and all information your guests need to have a great time in your new home. If you’re in a new area, don’t just supply your new address. Give them some directions or landmarks they may see on their way to your front door. If you’d like them to bring any food or drinks, let them know in advance. Finally, if you’ve themed your party, give them some instructions on how to dress. Ideally, send your invites a month or so in advance. That way, you’ve all got time to prepare for the perfect housewarming party.

2. Keep the Menu Familiar and Fun

Your housewarming party is not the place to test out new recipes on your family and friends. You’ll impress your guests and make things easier on yourself by sticking to your trusted family favorites.

For your housewarming party, pick foods that are easy for guests to eat and even some that may spark conversation between friends and family who are meeting for the first time. “Did you see how our fabulous hostess decked out the cheeseball in Steelers’ colors? Oh, by the way, did you catch last week’s game?” See what we’re suggesting here?

3. Become the Ultimate Tour Guide

During your housewarming party, remember that this is probably the first time your neighbors, friends and family have seen the inside of your new home and, yes, they want to see it! Be prepared to give multiple house tours throughout the party. You don’t need to go into every detail of your new home to impress your guests. Give them a witty, five to ten minute tour of your home.

It won’t hurt to make sure that you’ve got photos of your guests or gifts they’ve given you through the years prominently displayed in your new home, so that your guests can pick them out while they’re on tour. You can always rearrange after your party if they don’t quite fit your motif!

4. Create a Comfortable Atmosphere

Your housewarming party is probably just the first of many events you’ll host in your home. Set the mood for this and the events to follow by creating a warm, relaxing atmosphere in your new home and your guests will be begging to come back.
Provide ambient lighting and a musical playlist that will appeal to all audiences. Ample seating should be a top priority at your housewarming party, too. From your living room to your kitchen and patio, make sure there are plenty of cozy places where your guests can mingle.

If the idea of throwing an all-out housewarming party merely a month or so after you’ve moved in still seems like too much work, consider hosting a housewarming open house. That way, you can concentrate your attention on each and every guest as they filter in and out of your home throughout the day. No matter which housewarming option you choose, if you’re showcasing your home and your personality, you’ll be giving your guests exactly what they came for!
