Is It Time to Refresh Your Kitchen Appliances?

It’s been said that the kitchen is the heart of a home. In a busy household, sometimes a little extra care can go a long way to prolong the life of your appliances. Try these simple tips to help refresh and revive your kitchen appliances.
- Refrigerator - To keep your food at its freshest, check your settings periodically. Most refrigerators operate at 36 to 42 degrees Fahrenheit and most freezers at 0 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Wipe down gaskets (the flexible seals around the edges of the refrigerator door) with a damp cloth soaked in warm water and dish detergent, and then dry them with a towel. To ensure the door seals properly, try the ‘dollar bill’ trick. Close the door over a dollar bill. If you can easily pull the bill out, the gasket may need to be cleaned, adjusted or replaced.
Clean interior shelves, compartments, and walls with a mild cleanser every 3 months. The motor, coil and vents should be kept free of dust. Coils should be inspected and cleaned periodically, using a vacuum or brush.
- Dishwasher - For best results, when loading the unit, make sure the dishes do not block the spray arm. Mineral deposits on the heating element can easily be cleaned with a little vinegar diluted in water. Periodically, run an empty dishwasher with a cup of white vinegar to eliminate odors and buildup.
- Range/Oven - If you have a self-cleaning oven, do not attempt to clean it with chemicals or abrasive cleansers as these can damage the oven's finish. Always use the "self-cleaning" function when cleaning your oven. If your oven is not self-cleaning, use a cleanser specifically designed for ovens to ensure food safety.
- Garbage Disposal - Keep your garbage disposal clean and fresh, by simply placing a dozen ice cubes through the unit while running cold water. Be careful never to place your hands or fingers in the disposal unit.
- Microwave - Never attempt to heat food in a metal container. Any type of metal could damage the inside cavity. Place a small microwave safe bowl filled with a cup of water and half of a fresh lemon in the microwave and heat on high for 3-5 minutes. The steam will soften the debris making it easier to remove. Then wipe the inside clean with a damp sponge.
