Do Smart Home Systems Make Financial Sense for You?

Do Smart Home Systems Make Financial Sense for You?

As we  kick off 2017, your mind is bound to be churning with possible resolutions. If remodeling your home in the New Year tops your list of resolutions, you’ve undoubtedly considered investing in smart technology. You know, devices like programmable thermostats, smart light bulbs and smart home security systems, among an array of other witty new technology.

Of course, with all of the peace of mind that this increased technology provides, there often comes an increased expense, at least up front. Is installing smart home systems in your home worth the investment? It seems that answer may be yes… or no. It all may depend on the user!

Here are a few reasons why:

It’s hard to put a price on convenience. And, there is certain convenience in adding some automation to your home. Thanks to smart security systems, you don’t even have to get out of bed to arm your alarm system. In fact, you can even log into home security cameras from work, your mother-in-law’s or, even, the beach! It’s already difficult to put a price on security and being able to access and control that security from virtually anywhere just might be priceless!

Over time, smart technology will save on monthly bill costs. You’ve likely already heard of a programmable thermostat that you can set to control your heating and cooling costs based by the hours you are typically active at home, at work or asleep. That latest in smart thermostats actually senses whenever you’re active at home and then adjusts the temperature accordingly. There may be an upfront cost, but you’re sure to see monthly utility savings immediately after installation.

Smart technology may make your home more appealing to future buyers. If you install a smart security system or other smart features in your home, you may impress buyers, whether they’re looking for those features or not. Being the house on their “possibilities” list that has smart technology, while others do not, could be a deciding factor when it comes time to place an offer. The smart technology you install today could be the “wow” factor that sells your home in the future.

But… you probably ought to be a bit tech savvy. If you haven’t already upgraded to a smartphone, it is quite likely that you’d have no interest in smart technology. After all, we’re talking about controlling your locks, garage door and other home features from a mobile app. If you don’t already enjoy using apps, you’ll be in no rush to integrate smart technology into your home.

And, what did you plan to spend on remodeling in 2017, anyway? Obviously, when you consider making a resolution to remodel your home in the New Year, you consider two very important factors, your feature wish list and your budget! Frankly, it is likely that your kitchen or bathroom makeover will cost far more than installing a few smart home features that may make your daily routine a little more convenient and save you some extra money in monthly utilities. However, it also is worth noting that you may have been longing for granite and hardwoods or tile for far longer than you’ve been interested in regulating your home security from your smartphone.

So, is installing smart home systems a worthy investment when it comes to your list of 2017 resolutions? If only there were an app to help you decide!
