Homeowner Help: 8 Weekend Projects to Instantly Boost Your Home's Outdoor Appeal

Summer is an excellent time to bump up your home’s outdoor appeal. The weather typically cooperates; you’ve surely seen some must-do projects on Pinterest; and, you were looking for a new exercise routine anyway!

Well, it’s nearly August already; so, it’s time to get moving on those plans to give your home some outdoor appeal before summer is over. Here are a few weekend projects that will have your home’s exterior looking up to par in no time at all:

1. Let the Sunlight In

Show off your home’s sparkle inside and out by deep-cleaning your windows. You’ll add more light to your home inside; plus, clean windows will brighten up your home’s exterior, too. What’s the trick to making those windows shine? Experts say soapy water and a squeegee work the best!

2. Pay Attention to What’s Up Front

Summer is the perfect time to take care of any weather-beating that your front door has taken. Repair it, then refinish it or alter its appearance altogether by painting it a bright, new color. It will add a refreshing new spark to your home and even help to make guests feel more welcome, too.

If you would like to do more than just the front door, add some freshly-potted flowers, seasonal décor and a new welcome mat. You can really step it up a notch by tiling your door step. By the time you’re finished, your entryway will seem brand new!

3. Coordinate Your Colors

When it comes to summer painting projects, you don’t have to stop with the front door. Complement your entryway by giving your siding and shutters a fresh new look, too. While it may be a more time-consuming undertaking, adding your artistic touch to the siding and shutters may make your home the envy of the neighborhood.

4. Include All the Fixins

You likely won’t find better weather to complete needed repairs than in the summertime. So, whether it’s the roof, gutters, walkways, patio or all of the above that are in dire need of repairs, now is the time to take care of those tasks. Replace any damaged or broken roof shingles, clean out your gutters and seal sidewalk and patio cracks. The list may sound extensive, but completing a few patches here and there is better than making total replacements later.

5. Get All Decked Out

The season of outdoor entertaining can wreak havoc on your home’s exterior. In between hosting all of your summer parties, be sure to give your deck a good scrub down and add a new coat of stain to it. You’ll be ensuring its longevity; it will look better for your next party; and, it will be safer for your family and friends to enjoy.

6. Fawn Over the Flowerbeds

Even if you paid proper attention to the greens in your yard this spring, they are likely in need of some manicure maintenance. To instantly boost your outdoor appeal, pull out the hedge trimmer, add some mulch where it is needed and remove any unsightly stumps. Of course, keeping your lawn meticulously mowed is a summertime must for maintaining outdoor appeal as well.

7. Help Out Mr. Postman

Surprise your mail carrier by upgrading your mailbox and house numbers. While you may not even recognize your home’s fresh new look at first, your mail carrier may have an easier time finding you! You can add a new mailbox altogether or simply repaint your current box and post. Trendy new house numbers on your mailbox or entryway are the perfect finishing touch for instant outdoor appeal.

8. Shed Some Light on Your New Decor

After you’ve upgraded your siding and front door, fixed any cracks in your sidewalk and patio, plus meticulously cared for your lawn, shine the light on all of your hard work. Add new light fixtures to your entryway to give your home a truly updated look and consider adding some solar pathway lighting to show off your front lawn and walkway as well.

There is just over a month left before Labor Day arrives and has our minds turned toward back to school shopping and football season, but there is plenty of time left to boost your home’s outdoor appeal. Give your home a fresh new look while summer weather is on your side!
